Darlene with her one true love, Larry

I love this photo of Darlene because her smile is so full of light. This image was captured not long after her escape from Mac. Despite the years of abuse that Darlene endured, she never closed her heart to the prospect of true love. She found that love when she met Larry. They were married for 30+ years when Darlene died suddenly in December of 2025. I regret that she never got to read Squirrel Pie and have her own experience validated in some small way.
